We are facing a global climate crisis with serious and tragic consequences. It’s partly due to the increasing CO2 outlet which contributes to global warming. The gravity of the situation has not yet dawned on the world’s political leaders. As you read this, the search for oil in the Amazon is escalating and the areas appropriated for oil expanding rapidly. In two years, the area of rainforest in Peru appropriated for oil drilling has increased from 13 to 70 per cent (ref. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6326741.stm).
Deforestation causes the death of millions of creatures, and an immense amount of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. The trees function as a ”lid” on the CO2 stored in the earth beneath the forest. The climate is seriously endangered and the threat to us all is immediate.
The rainforest is the home of millions of amazing plants and animals. Yet undiscovered medicinal plants are exterminated daily, never to be recovered. The indigenous people of the rainforest are in possession of knowledge which belongs to our global cultural heritage. Hence, deforestation represents an astounding loss for humanity. We have to halt this development now! In five years it will probably be too late.
With this petition we demand that our nation acts responsibly to stop deforestation.
First, we demand that all remaining rainforest stay protected and the nations willing to protect their forest to be supported and recompensed. (Ecuador offers to refrain for one year from increasing deforestation and oil drilling in order to seek compensation from global society, ref. http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/apr2007/2007-04-24-04.asp).
Secondly, we demand that our nation supports this scheme through immediate efforts of compensation and the withdrawal of all destructive activities in the rainforest upheld by national investments, as well as influencing the private sector to do the same by means of legislation.
Thirdly, we also demand that our nation actively engage in securing territorial rights for indigenous peoples, as studies show this to be one of the more effective ways of protecting the forest.
Our politicians will not take appropriate action unless we insist they do. Therefore, sign this petition and then help others to follow.
